Accel Deep 42A MowerAccel Deep 42A Mower

The 42-in. (107-cm) Accel Deep Mower Deck is a stamped-steel, deep, flat-top design that delivers excellent cut quality, productivity, cleanliness, durability, and versatility. Optimal performance and dispersion of clippings is provided, even at faster mowing speeds:

  • 4.5-in. (11.4-cm) deep throughout the entire deck shell for optimum mowing, mulching, and bagging performance
    • Optional MulchControl™ attachment for superior mulching performance and versatility
  • Stamped-steel design eliminates sharp edges and corners where material can build up and diminish mowing performance
  • Mower deck suspended from the vehicle for a smooth and level cut
    • Adjustable mower wheels, positioned just above ground level, for reduced scalping
Excellent cut quality

Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:

  • Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
    • Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
  • Clean flow of material out of discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
  • Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal recutting, and an even distribution of clippings.
Productivity - gets the job done fast
Side-discharge chute on Accel Deep 42A Mower DeckSide-discharge chute on Accel Deep 42A Mower Deck

Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of re-cutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:

  • Greatly improves the mower's capacity to maintain excellent mowing performance in difficult mowing conditions and at higher speeds

Large discharge opening is both high and wide to handle more material:

  • Gives a smooth, even discharge of clippings at all mowing speeds
  • Reduces the chance of plugging, especially important when operating in wet, thick, or dense grass and when bagging
  • Cut-and-throw chute has a large, optimized inlet which aids in collecting material by using airflow from the large deck opening
Cleanliness - for the mower and the operator
Accel Deep 42A Mower DeckAccel Deep 42A Mower Deck
Accel Deep 42A Mower DeckAccel Deep 42A Mower Deck

The flat-top shape of the deck stamping is optimal for keeping itself and the operator clean:

  • There are few places to catch and hold material on the top and underneath the deck.
    • Top of deck stays cleaner, reducing time and effort needed for cleaning and service
    • Underside of deck is self-cleaning to maintain optimum performance without build-up of material to interfere with the flow of air and clippings
    • Less need to clean and remove build-up of material from underside deck
  • The depth of the Accel Deep Mower Deck minimizes the amount of material that escapes from the front of the deck
    • Limited amount of material to drift onto the operator and mower deck
    • Even flow of material discharged out the chute, less re-cutting results in larger pieces that are less likely to end up on the operator
    • Mulching prevents the discharge of material completely
      • Versatility of MulchControl attachment makes mulching a practical solution for most mowing situations

Cleaning a mower deck, both top and bottom, is one of the most frequent maintenance activities:

  • The flat-top design reduces places for material to build up and makes material that does collect easy to remove.

MulchControl baffle closedMulchControl baffle closed
MulchControl handleMulchControl handle
  • The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
    • The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • Changing from mulching to side discharge or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

  • Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • Usually side-discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
  • Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired
Superior durability is designed in
Spindle pockets on the 42A MowerSpindle pockets on the 42A Mower
Mower wheels are double-capturedMower wheels are double-captured

The 42A Mower Deck has strong spindle pockets, to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough service:

  • Ribs in the deck shell add strength where it is needed.
  • The 42A has a 16 percent heavier overall weight than the Edge™ Xtra 42-in. (107-cm) Mower Deck that it replaces.

Mower wheels are double-captured:

  • Provides greater strength and durability for longer, trouble-free life.
  • Single-bolt adjustment makes setting wheels to the correct height for the cutting height quick and easy.

Low-tension belt-drive design reduces the side load on the engines lower bearing and mower deck bearings for longer life.

Rolled outer edge of the deck provides extra strength and protection.

Dual-stage E-coat and powder-paint coatings provide extra protection from rust.

Versatility - easy to change between side discharge, mulch, and bagging modes

The 42A Mower is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another:

  • The mower's cut-and-throw design allows bagging with just the addition of the bagger chute, once the special bagging blades have been installed.
    • The 42A cut-and-throw chute is easy to install and securely held in place at the front and rear to provide a tight seal between the mower deck and the chute.
      • The rear latch is adjustable to allow for the optimum setting for easy use and a tight seal.
    • The bagging blades can be used for side discharging also.
  • With the optional MulchControl attachment installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side-discharge to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever.
  • The rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl blades installed.
  • The front baffle, either the one included with the rear bagger chute or the one included with MulchControl (B), can remain in place for side discharging.
    • For ultimate side-discharge performance this baffle can be removed.
  • The optional MulchControl attachment includes a rear MulchControl baffle (A), held in place by two carriage bolts, at the rear edge of the discharge opening. This baffle:
    • Must be removed for installation of the rear bagger chute, a 13-mm (0.51-in.) wrench is required (the bagger chute cannot be installed without removing this baffle)
    • Can remain removed for side discharging material
    • Must be re-installed for mulching
MulchControl option

The MulchControl attachment for the 42A Mower Deck makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer use
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings
How MulchControl works
MulchControl baffle openMulchControl baffle open
MulchControl baffle closedMulchControl baffle closed

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material passes through the discharge opening.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is closed, the material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.

  • Both the rear bagger chute and the MulchControl attachment come with a baffle that bolts inside the mower deck along the front edge to narrow the discharge opening, which has been optimized for side discharging material, and direct the material into the bagger chute.
    • If the mower deck is equipped with MulchControl, the front bagger baffle included with the bagger chute is not used.
  • The front baffle, either the one included with the rear bagger or the one included with MulchControl (B), can remain in place for side discharging.
    • For ultimate side-discharge performance this baffle can be removed.
  • The MulchControl attachment includes a rear MulchControl baffle (A), held in place by two carriage bolts, at the rear edge of the discharge opening. This baffle:
    • Must be removed for installation of the rear bagger chute, a 13-mm wrench is required (The bagger chute cannot be installed without removing this baffle.)
    • Can remain removed for side discharging material
    • Must be re-installed for mulching
Mower blades

High lift bagging blades are included. They provide optimum performance when bagging in difficult conditions, such as when the grass is moist, dense, or long.

  • High-lift blades also work well when side discharging material.

Mulching blades are included with the MulchControl attachment. They can be used for mulching, side discharging, and bagging in most conditions.

X350 Tractor with Accel Deep MowerX350 Tractor with Accel Deep Mower

MulchControl for the 42-in. (107-cm) Accel Deep (42A) Mower Deck makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer use
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings
How MulchControl works
MulchControl baffle openMulchControl baffle open
MulchControl baffle closedMulchControl baffle closed

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • MulchControl includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material passes through the discharge opening.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is closed, the material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.
MulchControl baffle closedMulchControl baffle closed
MulchControl handleMulchControl handle
  • The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
    • The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • Changing from mulching to side discharging or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharging when needed.

MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired
  • 42A Mower Deck requires a MulchControl baffle be removed to install the bagger chute; see 42A versatility explanation for more information

Great mower

5/5

I bought this to replace my tractor once we moved out to a bigger lot. It took some getting used to but the learning curve was short and this machine blows my 2 year old e120 out of the water. Highly recommend

Not 100% Satisfied with this mower

3/5

I've used this mower for one complete season and I have some issues with it as follows: 1)There is a significant amount of blow-out from under the front left section of the mower deck. It is enough to cover my feet and legs with debris and can cover the foot rest area. When the bagger is used, there is a significant amount of debris that blows out also. If a baffle kit is available and is needed, then that tells me that Deere knows this is a problem and with $4k invested, why should I have to pay for this kind of a fix. Photo below... 2) On my former John Deere, the bagger attachment was easily put on and taken off. The bagger attachment for this mower is bolted on so you cannot remove it easily. 3)You have to purchase a rear bumper assembly in order to have towing capability. $120 +/- 3)Trivial, but the cup holders are so near the motor that nothing stays cold.

Pros

  • sufficient power & speed

Cons

  • deck blow out

solid machine

5/5

I have a one acre property on a corner lot with sidewalks in 2 directions. I was spending about 2.5 hours to completely mow and trim my lawn. I was mowing with a 42" L111 JD lawn tractor. Now with my new Z345R I get everything done in 1.5 hours and my lawn looks very manicured. My neighbors are commenting about the good looks. The cut is precise with no scalping. The 22 HP engine is strong having ample power for taller grass after a good rain and plenty of sun. Maneuvering around my trees and flower beds is super simple. For smaller 1-2 acre properties, you can't do any better. The machine is solidly built and easy to operate. I definitely recommend this machine and if I ever need to purchase another it will certainly be a John Deere.

Pros

  • can't beat it!

Great Mower

5/5

So first of I went from a Craftsman y3500 to the z345R and I love this mower. It got plenty of power with the vtwin motor and rides across my rough lawn with ease. I would suggest the mulching kit because it does trow clippings pretty far. The only "complaint" I have with it is the rear wheel base is 44" and I choose the 42" deck. So I can't get right up against my landscaping but then again I get to use my sthil trimmer more. The 345R is a perfect blend of comfort convenience and power in a zero turn.

Pros

  • comfort
  • great cut
  • power
  • ease of use

Cons

  • rear wheel base

Easy to use

4/5

Starts every time and handles great. Need to get used to ztr as it can skid grass on turns until used to mower. That could happen on any ztr. Only negative issue is no fuel tank gauge. Really needs a gauge. Overall mows well and fast. Great mower.

Pros

  • starts well
  • fast mow

Cons

  • no gas gauge

Just get it.

5/5

For a 1 to 2 acre property, the 42 inch deck is the right choice. That size gives very good maneuverability. Also, I live on a bluff, that ends at a major river, ie boggy at end. So, hill use & weight in boggy conditions is a factor. John Deere uses a floating deck, this is ideal for a hill. Also the high quality stamped deck, dramatically reduces the weight, ie won’t sink in. A welded deck is far heavier, and also has no give on a hill, or against a unforeseen object. So, then I was down to selecting the right John Deere model. My best friend looked into it, he was a former commercial use lawn guy. He checked on line, then with a dealer. This is it. Is it pricey, yes. Is it ever a great deal, or on sale, no. I think John Deere has kept its profits reasonable, to allow a great product to be within reach of a homeowner. Hence, no sales. Here’s a brake down from my old Z225 and this now 22 horse Z345R. It is very well designed. The seat is outstanding. The floor deck lever is great. The seat arms are totally useless unless your 12 year old cuts the grass. My shoulders are wider then the arms of the seat, I took them off. This model is geared for speed. Also, one pass now looks like the old Z225 after two passes. JD is no joke on cut quality. My wife even commented, “The grass smells so good.” It is a very clean cut. Now, it’s powerful, so yes it blows more grass out, & farther. But I’m not going to complain that it’s too good. Use sunglasses, brush yourself off, no big deal. Back to the 22 horse engine, get it. It’s now geared for such forward speed, reverse is only for small maneuvers, unlike the older models. The old 18.5 feels like it has the same Torque, so the 20 horse would be underpowered if using on a hill or wet boggy conditions. The hose deck cleanup is very cool, and works. The design spreads the weight out, keeping the deck in a good floating position. Nice floor mats.

Pros

  • speed
  • cut quality
  • seat comfort
  • ease of maintenance
  • design

Cons

  • pricey
  • reverse is geared to slow

Excellent purchase

5/5

I wasn't sure about spending $3000 on a mower, but now am so glad I did. It runs great, is easy to drive, and the yard looks great. What used to be a 1 1/2 hour job with the push mower is now 25 minutes, and now I don't even break a sweat. I have a few small trees to mow around, so needed the zero turn mower to get in the tight places, and it does great. I added the mulch kit, which I recommend as it also does a great job.

  • easy to drive

Regret it now

1/5

Well I waited for years and years to finally get a John Deere. Sold my perfect 26 year old Craftsman and pulled the trigger on this one. Had them put on a bagger before I picked it up. I can not even make 2 laps without being COVERED up with grass and dust coming out the front of it. Time I get done the floor pan is full. I have never had a mower that I had to go take a shower before I can even put the lawnmower up. The dealer blames it on the bagger so I took it off and still does the same thing. They say its normal. Can not be normal, no one would put up with this. With 4 hours on it I am going to have to sell it to get a riding mower again. So disappointed.

Pros

  • looks good
  • fun to drive

Cons

  • dealer are horrible
  • throws grass all over you from the front

Love it !

5/5

I purchased a Z345R to replace a traditional John Deere riding mower that I had owned for a couple of years. I sold it to purchase this mower. I have cut my mowing time in half ! I had no idea how much fun these zero turn mowers were to operate. Yes they do take some getting used to, but practice makes perfect. Just take it slow ! One thing I did not realize was that maximum cutting height is 3 1/2 inches, not 4 inches. There is a metal bracket on the left side of the deck that keeps you from adjusting it past 3 1/2 inches. You need to leave a minimum of 1/4 inch between the top of that bracket and the bottom of the operators platform to allow for movement when you hit a bump in your yard. I normally cut my grass at 4 inches, but had to lower it by 1/2 inch to match my trim mower, which is now set at 3 1/2 inches. I have found that I do not need to use my trim mower as much as I did before. The accel deep deck is a huge plus and will handle any grass volume that you throw at it. If you are hesitant to purchase a zero turn mower, spend the extra $$ on this model, you will be glad that you did ! It comes standard with all the accessories that I would add, including the seat which is very comfortable. I removed the arm rests on each side of the seat because I did not use them, and they left me feeling a little cramped in the seat. Another fine mower from John Deere....

Pros

  • manuverability
  • ease of operation

Cons

  • max cutting height is 3.5 inches

This is one very nice machine easy to use does a great job mowing, they say zero turns are no good on hills if you go straight up and down you can mow hills that are 45 degree, the mulch kit is a must the yard looks like you bag it with this option , the bumper and hitch kit are rock solid on this machine. John Deere has done a great job of listening to their customs.

Warning: Z345R has starting problem

2/5

I have had my Z345R for three weeks. The first time I tried to start, it would not start. Called the dealer and they mentioned they have had several other calls with same problem. The Auto Choke is not working. They told me a little trick to do to get it working, by lifting the chock lever by engine. Today, I went to mow and it started right off. I turned off the mower and now I cannot get it to start, no matter what I try! There really is no neutral lever, so I had to get my big four wheeler out to put it off my front lawn. I'm planning on calling and having dealer pick up and returning z345r, it appears to be a lemon!
